We're growing and dying

Seeds are all started now, finished them on Friday. This morning Cortney says to come take a look
and to my surprise the Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and early cabbage are up. :o)
Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts

Cortney is experiencing a developing talent. She's never been one for coloring or drawing, never seemed to like  it much. That is until a  few months ago, when she expressed interest in drawing animals and scenery.
When in the city one day, we stopped at a local craft shop and picked up some "How to Draw" books on animals and flowers. Although she isn't a perfectionist in many areas, she seems to be in this area and therefore gets frustrated easily.  I think she's off to a really good start, don't you?

Now I hope I didn't worry anyone with the dying part of the title. I was simply referring to a dying tree in our front yard, destine to become part of our next winter's firewood.  We still have branches to clean up, those that I don't sneak off and save for kindling bundles*wink* and Mike is going to cut the stump down lower and then work on removing it entirely. I hate mowing around things and weed whacking is hard on my back.  Not sure we'll plant another tree in the front yard, as it tends to shade the garden all afternoon.

Blessings for your week :o)

Yes, I think Courtneys horse is just great! You can also draw using a grid. Take a piece of paper and put line grids or buy grid paper, and then grid your photo or picture, what ever, and connect the squares and you'll have a perfect drawing! Your new little plants are pretty cute!! Hope they grow up strong and produce much!! ...debbie

You definitely have a budding artist there! Too bad groceries come in plastic or reusable these days. Paper grocery sacks were the only way my mom used to keep up with the demand for 'drawing paper' for my sisters and me when we were small.

Yes, you worried me when I read your title, but I'm glad it's just a tree. The free firewood will be a blessing and the added sunshine will be great for the garden. It's all good.

Something Cortney and The Youngun will have in common! My girl draws all the time, and really loves it. It does look like Cortney has talent!

So glad it's the tree and not you that's croaked! ;0) and glad to hear your seedlings are already coming up!

Wow, you have quite an artist there! She is doing very, very well!

Trees that become firewood around here serve their ultimate purpose of keeping us warm. We took down that ancient catalpa this past year that will last a couple of years. Fortunately, we have enough old trees and new ones coming up where we don't mow that we can keep ourselves in firewood until the end of time.

Happy week to you, too. :)

Cortney does have talent. Tell her not to be a perfectionist, the only way to get better is to keep going. I use to give up because it didn't look like I wanted. Then I decided it never would if I didn't practice.
My drawing has gotten a lot better since I gave up being a perfectionist.
I can't believe the seeds have already sprouted. I wish mine would sprout that fast.

Envy the rake. Ours are on small tables in every window facing east, the south ones get too hot. Are you also using cold frames?

My gosh, where is all the snow? I still have 5 ft drifts in the front and 20 ft in the trees in the back. Brrrr, still cold too.
Love when the first plants stick their heads up out of the ground. New life.
Cortney I love to draw also. Your picture is great. Keep up the great work.
I'm with you on mowing around things. We planted so many trees but will have to pull up alot of them as they are dying. Think it could be our well water. To much salt. Would love to have nice flower gardens but my what work to keep everything growing. Old age I guess. We just keep trying. love ya

Wow-those are her first attempts? Beautiful drawings, well-proportioned! Thanks for your comment at my blog. :)
Love all the new little seedlings popping up. I've never had very good luck transplanting seedlings to the ground, so I haven't done that in awhile. Holly

I always wanted to be able to draw. I bought the books and the paper but never got the knack for it.

Debbie,
Thanks for the idea on the grid paper, should have thought of that myself.:o)
I'm just so glad to see sprouts and signs of new life. This winter has been so up and down I just long for it to be done*sigh*

WWRWH,
Thanks for your comment, always enjoy what you have to say. :o) Yes, with time and more practice I think she'll be quite good!
The firewood is a blessing, as bad as I hate to loose a good tree, it isn't wasted, none of it. Even the small branches are bundled for kindling. The sunshine on that end of the garden will help me with arranging and rotating the main garden plot. Since this was always a cooler spot( shady) I could only put cooler temp. crops there.

GW,
Yes, Youngun is very talented too, and is off to a good start, being so young. Cortney waited until she's almost 20 yrs old before really trying to draw.
I thought about it after I posted the title and had to edit it and explain, I didn't want anyone to think someone died, or that we'd lost another animal*sigh*
I was blessed and surprised to see sprouts so soon, keeping it in my prayers that we have a good germination with all the seeds. Last season I struggled with peppers, so bought new OP seed this year!

Lois,
Thank you, Cortney feels better about me sharing her drawing. She was upset at first, because it was only a sketch and not perfect. She's been drawing this horse via the book for a month or so and I think she's made great strides. She wouldn't let me show her first few attempts.
In the bottom of one of our pastures we've let cottonwoods and willows take hold, this not only provides shade for the animals, something to scratch on, but hopefully firewood for future uses. We do have some to close to the fenceline we'll have to cut down and pull out, they'll make good starter firewood( for the beginning of the winter season, when you don't need a fire all day*wink*) We of course can't keep enough wood for all time, but it will help. :o)

There's just life,
Thank you, I had her read your comment and she agreed to try not to be so picky.
I thought Cortney was pulling my leg when she told me we had sprouts, it is fast, for whatever reason. We did let the soil( in the 4 packs set in the grenhouse for a day, wetting the soil before planting the seeds. Maybe the moist and warmed soil really helped. Whatever it was I'm just thrilled to see sprouts so quick!

Heritage Farmgirl,
Not this year, but we did in seasons past. We build a greenhouse and plan to use it, after our sedlings get a good hardy start and after frost dangers are over( we don't heat the greenhouse) This is why we use the indoor greenhouse. It helps to hold the humidity levels for the seedlings, after they are big enough you have to remove the plastic tops. Our house is usually cooler than most, so the added heat of a 60 watt bulb helps hold the temps up in the evening. Thanks for chatting!

Nita,
Cortney has worked very hard on getting her horse drawn so good. She was a bit miffed that I'd posted it but I told her I was so proud of her, I just wanted to share it, she was feeling better about it then. Now with all of the wonderful feedback, she shining bright and drawing flowers now!*wink*
All I can say is that I'm glad I don't live in ND! I'm already so... sick of winter and NEED Spring to arrive. Stay warm, Hugs to Leroy and you both.

Holly,
No not her first attempts, she's been drawing this horse for a month or so, this is just the best one so far. She was mad that I posted it at all. Forget posting her first attempts and then showing how much she's improved*wink* She's feeling better about all of it now with some many nice compliments.
Sorry to hear you've not had good success with your seedlings. We have had our ups and downs too, but more successes than failures. Last season I couldn't get peppers started to save my life. This year I purchased new OP seeds, so praying they all pop through*wink*

Mark,
She gets her talent( if it is passed on) from both myself and her Dad. My Grandfather( my Mom's Dad) was an aspiring artist, my Mom has an artistic touch as do I. Someday I'd like to find the time to begin drawing and painting again. It's just that I'm the type of person, who wants to finish what she starts( I hate having to go back to something days, weeks or months later) I really enoy pastels and watercolor. Pencil sketching or doodling is a nervous habit for me*wink*
I often think, boy I'd love to be able to sing, but that just wasn't one of my God given talents, LOL!!!! Maybe someday in Heaven I'll sing like an angel*wink*

Thank you all for your compliments( Cortney is smiling from ear to ear) and for chatting and sharing.
Blessings,
Kelle
