Human Events
Obamacare Sticker Shock: Taxing Over 15,000 Medicine
10/14/2010

Nancy Pelosi warned us we'd have to pass Obamacare to find out what's in it.

Higher insurance premiums are hitting families hard. Medicare Advantage has

been decimated. Millions will be forced into government-run Medicaid where

long lines and rationing await.

If we like our insurance -- too bad.

Beginning January 1, 2011, more than 15,000 over-the-counter (OTC) health

care items will require a prescription (and that means a doctor's visit) for

tax-free reimbursement.

Under Obamacare, OTC drugs cannot be reimbursed tax-free from Health Savings

Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) without a government

bureaucrat-required permission slip.

In response to new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) guidance (the IRS is the

Obamacare enforcement agency), the Special Interest Group for IIAS Standards

(SIGIS) http://www.sig-is.org/en/documents/2...essRelease.pdf

released a new list of OTC medications that will require a prescription for

a tax-free withdrawal from an HSA or an FSA under Obamacare.

SIGIS is an industry group for health care debit card transactions and merchants.

According to SIGIS, 15,000 OTC health care items are barred from purchase by

these accounts without prescription.
Below is a partial list of the OTC item categories:
Acid Controllers
Allergy and Sinus medicine
Antibiotics
Anti-Diarrheals
Anti-Gas Products
Anti-Itch and Insect Bite
Anti-Parasitic Treatments
Baby Rash Ointments/Creams
Cold Sore Remedies

But if I'm reading the article correctly, consumers will still be able to buy these products with money out of their own pockets, right?

Yes, it appears that this only affects those tax free medical savings accounts. If you want to use that money to purchase the ORC listed items, you'll be required to get a prescription for them. So much for the benefit of tax free accounts though.
Just another secret that we all had to pass the bill to see, wonder what else there is?

Keeps getting worse and worse and worse.

This is just another eye opener for us to get out a vote on Nov. 2nd.

We do not want Obamacare, and to boot, we pay way to much in taxes already.

Thank you my friend, for educating us on one more health care scare.

Blessings,
Mel

Craftivist,
I keep thinking that this can't possibly get any worse and then I wake up to a new day of more bad news*sigh* Personally I think this is going to become our norm for several years :o(

Mel,
You are welcome. I just wonder what else will turn up*sigh*
This actually wouldn't affect us personally as we don't use those medical savings plans, but felt I needed to share the sneekiness with those that do.
Blessings,
Kelle

You "who cares if its true, just scare the hell out of them" people crack me up. Did anyone bother to check how many items on this list already require a prescription to get?

So let me get this straight, you want government to reduce the deficit but you don't want to pay tax on money you earned because you have to spend that money on medical issues? Why stop with medical issues, how about a tax free car maintenance account? Tax free home repair account?

Based on percent of income, we are ALL paying less in taxes than we have most our lives. You want to make a difference in spendable income, let Obamacare reign in the out of control insurance business. Do a little research see how much of a salary and bonus the CEO of your health insurance company received the last couple years and then tell me what's fair.
